[Project by ArqEstructura]
Situated at nearly 1000 m altitude in the mountains of Ronda, Andalusia (southern Spain), in a nature reserve containing Iberian archaeological remains, this proposal for a rural resort consists of a pair of ‘cortijo’ buildings, the modernity of which only becomes apparent up close. Seeking to minimize its visual and ecological footprint in deference to the stunning landscape, the project aims to be architecturally subtle and discreet.
The larger cortijo accommodates eight luxurious suites, a restaurant, bar, and gym; while the smaller one contains four suites, spa, and the owner’s residence. The architecture is shaped by the extreme climate, topography, solar orientation, and views; incorporating vernacular elements such as courtyard gardens and porches that provide plenty of sheltered intermediary spaces.
